Series of side and front elevation illustrations of the Scimitar Oryx
Description
Description

Since it mostly exists in the desert and semi-desert environment of north Africa, the Scimitar Oryx (Oryx dammah) can go for years without water. It is also called the Sahara oryx or Scimitar-horned oryx. It feeds on foliage, grasses, and succulent plants. You can find it in social groupings of mixed sexes controlled by bulls. The coat color is white, though the neck and chest may have patches of rusty brown. The face may have a brown/black and white mask. Both sexes have ringed backward, curving horns. The scimitar oryx is well adapted to the high desert temperatures and nomadic lifestyle.
