People Standing

Standing is an upright human posture in which the body is supported only by the feet. Often misunderstood as a static position, standing is actually a form of dynamic balance where the center of the body is supported by rocking on the front of the ankle. Standing erect requires a high degree of coordination and control of a persons nervous system and core muscles to maintain stability. The average age in which humans begin to stand is between 8-12 months. Standing is believed to have beneficial cognitive and health impacts and many workplaces are now offering standing desks as a desk option.

Is standing good for your health?

Standing has been proven to decrease the risk of heart disease as standing lowers blood sugar and cholesterol while reducing weight. Standing is also correlated to reducing back pain, increased productivity, higher energy levels, and greater life expectancy.

How long should you stand at your desk?

Experts advise that people stand at their desk between 15-30 minutes every hour (1:4 to 1:3 ratio) to gain the health benefits of standing.

When do children learn to stand?

Children learn to stand without support as early as 8 months, with an average between 10-12 months.

Human Spacing - Public Space
Scaled elevation illustration of the various zones of human distances for human separation in Public Spaces

Public Spaces are places that are open and accessible to people. Typical examples include roads, public squares, parks, and beaches. Although government buildings may have some restrictions and closed off areas with limitations, some spaces such as public libraries can be considered public spaces.

While privately owned buildings and property are not considered public spaces, they may affect the public visual landscape. Shared spaces have been recently advanced to better accommodate a pedestrian’s experience in a public space jointly used by automobiles.

The perceived zones of public space are adjustable depending on the situation and the scenario, with a distance of 12’-25’ (3.66-7.62 m) being understand as a common comfortable distance in public between two people. A spacing of 0’-12’ (3.66 m) is considered being too close between strangers in public, while a distance of more than 25’ (7.62 m) is understood as far.

Coughing Into Elbow - Men - Standing
Front elevation drawings of Men coughing into their elbow in various standing postures labeled with average height

Coughing can be a symptom of a positive respiratory infection. While everyone coughs to clear their throat from time to time, persistent coughing should be monitored with guidance from a healthcare provider to ensure others don’t get sick. When coughing, you should cough into your elbow, immediately wash your hands, avoid touching your face, and refrain from sharing eating utensils with others.

Human Spacing - Social Space
Side elevation drawing dimensioning the various zones of human spacing that we consider as forms of social space

A social space is a gathering place where people gather and interact. It can be physical or virtual, like social media platforms. In physical social spaces there is usually a 4-12 feet distance between acquaintances. Some examples of social spaces are public places, such as town squares or parks, and others are privately owned and regulated, such as pubs and shopping malls.

Social spaces are used by various communities to conduct different types of social interaction, and it assigns appropriate places to different social relations. They can be used to implement a social cohesion in communities. As a result, the term spans greater than the dichotomy of public and private space.

Social space is perceived and adjusted depending on the situation and the level of friendship and/or understanding between people. A social spacing of 0’-4’ (0-1.22 m) between people would be considered too close. The most comfortable social spacing is typically in the range of 4’-7’ (1.22-2.13 m), while a distance of 7’-12’ (2.13-3.66 m) feels too far for social interactions.
