Description
Description

The Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is one of the most iconic plants of the American Southwest, instantly recognizable by its tall, columnar form and upward-reaching arms. Often symbolizing the Sonoran Desert, this cactus can grow as a solitary trunk or with multiple branches, each covered in pleated ribs and protective spines. Sometimes referred to simply as “Saguaro,” it is native exclusively to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, California, and northwestern Mexico.

The Saguaro produces large, white, waxy flowers that bloom at night and attract bats and other pollinators. These blooms mature into red, fleshy fruits rich in seeds, which have traditionally been harvested by Indigenous peoples. As a keystone species, the Saguaro provides nesting sites and food for desert birds, insects, and mammals. It has a remarkably long lifespan, with some individuals living over 150 years, making it a symbol of endurance and adaptation in arid landscapes.

Cacti (family Cactaceae) are a diverse group of succulent plants known for their distinctive adaptations to arid environments. Characterized by thick, fleshy stems that store water, they often have spines instead of leaves, minimizing water loss and protecting them from herbivores.
