Théoden is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He is the much-loved King of Rohan and Uncle to Éomer and Éowyn, who he raises as his own. During his reign, he gave more and more power to his chief adviser Grima, who began poisoning Théoden in order to control him and his kingdom. When Théoden is released from Grima’s control and is reunited with his sword, he is restored to his former self and is from then known as Théoden Ednew the renewed. He fights against Sauron in the War of the Rings but is fatally wounded in Battle of the Pelennor Fields when he is thrown from his horse by the witch king of Angmar. In the film franchise Théoden is played by Bernard Hill.
