Chinese Fountain Grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides), also known simply as Fountain Grass, is a warm-season, clump-forming ornamental grass native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. A member of the Poaceae family, it is prized for its graceful, arching foliage and soft, bottlebrush-like flower spikes that resemble a fountain in motion—hence its common name.

It typically grows in open meadows, grassy slopes, and woodland edges, where it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. The slender green leaves turn golden to bronze in autumn, adding seasonal interest, while the flower plumes—ranging from creamy white to purplish—appear in late summer and persist into winter.

Pennisetum alopecuroides is widely used in ornamental landscapes for its flowing texture, dynamic movement, and architectural shape. It’s especially effective in mass plantings, borders, or as a softening element alongside hardscapes. Its seed heads attract birds, contributing both ecological value and aesthetic charm to designed spaces.
