Description

George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was born and grew up in Virginia. George Washington was born into a land-owning family. He was a planter by occupation - he owned and ran several slave plantations in his lifetime, the most well known being Mount Vernon. He became Commander-in-Chief of the military before the start of the Revolutionary War and was crucial in leading the American troops. After military success and Independence from the British, he was elected as President and served from 1789 to 1797. He is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America.
