The Atari 2600 is the Atari Video Computer System or Atari VCS is a home video gaming console developed by Atari Inc. The game was released in September 1977. The Atari 2600 popularized use of the microprocessor-based hardware and games stored on ROM cartridges. The gaming console was bundled with 2 joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a game cartridge with Combat and later Pacman. It originally launched with 9 low resolution games in 2 cartridges. The most heavily invested games by Atari were Pac-Man and E.T. the ExtraTerrestrial. About 30 million units of Atari 2600 were sold in its lifetime. Atari 2600 was discontinued in 1992.
