The mentor of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn uses his dying breath to request that Obi-Wan take Anakin Skywalker on as his Padawan, a move that sets in place the events that lead to the creation of Darth Vader. He is not a member of the Jedi Council, likely because of his difficulty following their rules. Qui-Gon is also the known first Jedi to speak to living Jedi after death.
