Set of illustrations of the Chihuahua in seated and standing positions viewed from the side profile

Named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, the Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world, weighing in at as little as two pounds. The Chihuahua generally falls into one of two categories—the Smooth Coat (shorthaired) Chihuahua or the Long Coat (longhaired) Chihuahua—and within these categories may have either an apple head shape or a deer head shape. With their huge personalities, Chihuahuas have been favored for centuries as lap dog companions and have a reputation for having big-dog attitudes despite their minuscule size.

Dogs are domesticated mammals of the Carnivora order. Descendants of wolves, dogs are the first animals to have been domesticated by humans. Dogs are bred for particular physical and emotional characteristics and are often referred to as ‘man’s best friend’ referring to their high degree of loyalty.
