Samoyed

Set of illustrations of the Samoyed in seated and standing positions viewed from the side profile

A member of the working group, the Samoyed is a large, profoundly fluffy dog renowned for its gentle temperament and sweet smile. A native to northwest Russia and western Siberia, the Samoyed was bred to endure temperatures of minus-60 degrees and herd reindeer. These harsh circumstances resulted in their shocking, snowball-like appearance that makes them impervious to the cold. A highly energetic breed, the Samoyed’s pack instincts give way to a temperament similar to the Siberian Husky—outgoing, mischievous, and exceptionally friendly. Did you know that their widely-adored smile is the result of a critical adaptation that prevents them from drooling icicles in freezing temperatures?

Series of illustrations of the Samoyed dog breed lying down, and standing and sitting seen from the front

Male Samoyeds have a withers height between 21”-23.5” (53-60 cm) and a weight in the range of 45-65 lb (20-29.5 kg). Female Samoyeds have a withers height between 19”-21” (48-53 cm) and a weight in the range of 35-50 lb (15.9-22.7 kg). Dogs are domesticated mammals of the Carnivora order. Descendants of wolves, dogs are the first animals to have been domesticated by humans. Dogs are bred for particular physical and emotional characteristics and are often referred to as ‘man’s best friend’ referring to their high degree of loyalty.
