Bharadvaja’s Twist (Bharadvajasana)

Illustrated yoga poses of women performing the Bharadvaja’s Twist

Bharadvaja’s Twist is an intermediate seated twist that stretches the spine, shoulders, and hips as well as relieves stress, helps digestion, and strengthens the lower back. Bharadvajas is also known to be good for Yogi’s suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Preparatory postures for Bharadvaja’s Twist include bound angle, hero pose, and Extended Triangle Pose.

Drawings of people performing the Bharadvaja’s Twist represented in outline silhouettes

To do Bharadvaja’s Twist, start with the legs out front in a Staff Pose, lean to the right, and move the legs to the left. On an inhale, left the torso, exhale and twist to the right, letting the neck be the last to turn. There are a few modifications to this twist as well as ways to advance the posture.
