Monkey Pose (Hanumanasana / Anjaneyasana)

Illustrated yoga poses of women performing the Monkey Pose

Monkey Pose is considered an intermediate posture that is basically like doing the splits. There are many options to prepare and work towards this full posture and using props is highly encouraged. Some preparatory postures to Monkey Pose include Head to Knee Forward Bend, Bound Angle and Hero Pose. Yogi’s with hip issues use caution. This posture can help those Yogi’s dealing with sciatica.

Drawings of people performing the Monkey Pose represented in outline silhouettes

To do Monkey Pose, there are a few options to get into the posture. It is advised to work slowly. One way to get into this posture is to get into a low lunge and move the front leg forward to a full split. Yogi’s get some help with this one!
